Reasons to Support the Florida Charter School Movement

Florida charter schools served 154,481 students in 2010-11. Explore the links below to find a charter school in your neighborhood, or to learn more about the Florida charter school movement in general.

Join Parents for Charter Schools

The Florida charter school movement has spawned a quiet revolution in the public education in Florida.  Parents in 41 counties now have the choice to send their children to public charter schools if they are unhappy with the traditional public schools in their area.

A well-run charter school can offer parents a refreshing change to the traditional public school environment. Parents choose charter schools for the following reasons:

  • They offer smaller learning environments
  • Students receive more personal attention and individual academic assistance
  • Parents have more opportunities to get involved and really make a difference
  • Students feel safer and more secure at a charter school
  • Charter schools can bypass big-district bureaucracy
  • Many charter schools offer special programming, such as dual-language immersion, dual-enrollment in nearby community colleges, or a thematic emphasis (the arts, technology, science, environmental education)
  • Charter schools serve special education populations, including disabled and autistic students

Many students who enter charter schools who are performing below grade level start to do better than their peers in traditional public schools after attending charter schools for a few years.

How FCPCS Helps Charter Schools

FCPCS is the primary membership organization for charter schools in Florida. It is recognized and respected nationally for its advocacy work on behalf of charter schools and their families.

Since it was founded by several charter school operators in 1999, FCPCS has been at the forefront of the charter school movement in the state. It supports the growth of high quality, accredited charter schools by providing technical resources and training to charter schools that wish to improve. FCPCS is in favor of a fair and rigorous system of accountability for all charter schools operating in Florida.

FCPCS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Your donation to FCPCS is tax-exempt to the extent allowable by law and will be used to support FCPCS operations, which include:

  • Advocating on behalf of Florida charter schools at the district, state and national levels
  • Supporting the operation of high quality charter schools in Florida
  • Training charter school administrators, teachers and board members
  • Providing resources for improved charter school operations
  • Supporting improved charter school legislation
